Lakes District Museum Digitization Project
Agreement Number:
1920-0886
Agreement Value:
$24,977.00
Agreement Date:
Apr 8, 2019 - Mar 31, 2020
Description:
This project focuses on digitizing the Lakes District Museum Society's documentary heritage resources, which consist of approximately 3,000 local photographs, negatives and slides dating back to the early 1900s, approximately 7,000 pages of historical documents (journals, typed interviews, etc.), and more than 400 editions of local “heritage” newspapers. The goal is to digitize these items in appropriate file formats, give each an applicable catalogue number, record metadata in each digital file, and prepare descriptions. The organization will then transfer the digital files to the Society's computer systems and to a portable back-up drive that can be stored off-site, to reduce the risk of loss.
Organization:
Library and Archives Canada
Expected Results:

Expected results of this project include digitization of documents, photographic materials, and heritage newspapers in the museum’s collections and moving originals to a climate-controlled vault for preservation. Long-term results include increased access to the museum's documentary heritage resources by schools, institutions, organizations, other museums and members of the public. In addition, the museum will share its new digitization technology, and associated services and expertise, with other small museums in the region without this capacity. The museum sees this project as a first step towards the creation of an online database to search for all documentary heritage resources related to the Lakes District.
