Description:
Grunt gallery will develop its online archival video collection with the goal of making this content accessible to the broadest possible audience. Our project involves digital transfer, editing, and sharing of 80-100 video tapes, and the transcription and English-language captioning of both new and previously digitized video. Recorded from 1988-2009, the video collection contains over 500 tapes of performance, video art, and dialogues by diverse practitioners including Indigenous, visible and linguistic minorities, Queer, gender-diverse, intersectional, and other marginalized artists. Considering the critical questions about representation our sector grapples with currently, the project will take special focus on pre-2000 recordings embodying progressive exploration of early-wave identity politics in Canadian media and performance art.
Organization:
Library and Archives Canada
Expected Results:

The short-term result of this project is the development of a more complete digital video archive, while the long-term result is ongoing multi-level engagement by documentary heritage and general audiences across demographics of ability.
Medium-level engagement outcomes is measured on Vimeo as the platform with the substantial content of the project. Videos garnering over 20 plays within six months of publishing are considered successful.
Long-term engagement is a function of research inquiries and reactivations. Given the active role of the archive in our programming, we consider collection engagement by younger generations of artists, and resultant connections with new in-person and online audiences, as another measure of success. The Archives Manager will field and track these deeper engagements, collecting articles, projects, and other outputs.
