Title:
Restoration of Mi'kmaq Language Scripture and Prayer Books
Agreement Number:
2122-0127
Agreement Value:
$2,450.00
Agreement Date:
May 20, 2021 - Mar 31, 2022
Description:
The Archives of the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth has in it's collection two books which have been referred to, in the past, as "Indian Good books." These are books of New Testament Scriptures, and traditional Catholic prayers which were translated into Mi'kmawi'simk (alphabetically, not in pictographs) as a means to support those among the Indigenous community of Nova Scotia who had embraced the Catholic faith. These volumes are in need of repair in order to make them available for viewing and an internal digitization project in the future. It is hoped that making these volumes available will help bring about further reconciliation and healing between the Catholic Church in Nova Scotia, and the Indigenous Catholic population.
Organization:
Library and Archives Canada
Expected Results:
The project will be considered a success when the two books are restored to the point where the books can be carefully handled, and opened to a maximum of 60 degrees, without causing further damage. The proposal obtained from the conservator includes the creation of a book stands which will allow for the books to be displayed for the Treaty Day celebration on Oct 1, 2021. The books will be displayed in a glass display case already in our possession to prevent damage and theft, with the books open, to allow visitors to view the original text.
A headcount of visitors will be taken as Treaty Day participants view the books on display, and a guest book provided to capture comments.
