Description:
The main goal of this project is to hire an additional Language Technicial to collect, digitize and catlog a large number of VHS tapes and audio recordings from across the Syilx in order to make them available for educational purposes.A secondary goal is for the Language Technicians to survey community members and Syilx organizations and communities to identify other recordings that need to be digitized, to review content and make a work plan for digitization of additional materials that may exist in educational institutions and in other communities who are interested in working with us.

Expected Results:

Hire an additional Language Technician to help support the Listen Hear our Voices project: Listening to our Sylix Ancestors project; Deliverables shared with Language technician team; Call out for OKIB members for their digitization collections; Researching current Traditional Use studies to work with Vernon Friendship Centre Society on their VHS collection; The 3 Language Technicians will receive training and ongoing mentorship at the AMP Lab at the University of British Columbia Okanagan.

Program Purpose:

Listen, Hear Our Voices supports First Nations, Inuit, and Métis governments and non-profit organizations in: 1) digitizing existing documentary heritage related to Indigenous languages and cultures, and 2) building the skills, knowledge and resources to do this work in their communities.
