Description:
The mandate of the Department of Culture and Heritage is “to document, preserve and promote Gwich’in culture, language, traditional knowledge and values.” The Department conducts research in the areas of culture, language and traditional knowledge so that this body of knowledge will be recorded and available for future generations, and to assist in the development of programs appropriate for Gwich'in needs.

Expected Results:

The expected short-term results include the hiring of a contract archivist, the assessment of the Department's current research materials and files, and the creation of an archiving plan.
The expected long-term goals include the implementation of the archiving plan, including a location for storing hard-copy materials, a plan for the digital archives the Department has accrued and will continue to accrue, along with all required logistics support to ensure that the archives are sustainable and useful and that they fit with the Department's work plans. Increased and sustainable access to the Department's archives for Gwich'in individuals and researchers will be another key aspect of this work.
