Description:
This project will train a young technical Heiltsuk person as a digitization technician, equipping them with the skills to handle specialized equipment and software, and to implement a spreadsheet to manage the metadata to digitize recordings. The project involves procuring equipment to digitize formats such as open-reel audio, MiniDV, and Digital8. Additionally, digitization procedures specific to the equipment and policies of the Heiltsuk Cultural Education Centre (HCEC) will be established. The digitization and processing efforts will prioritize recordings that have been identified as significant to families or community programs.

Expected Results:

Digitize 135 audiocassette tapes, 40 open-reel audiotapes, 25 VHS tapes, and 20 camcorder tapes (MiniDV or Digital8)

Process and edit about 150 of the digitized media files for access

Assemble high-quality digitization systems, policy and procedure manuals

Update HCEC network cabling and configure existing storage RAIDs for project

Creation of digitized copies of important parts of the historic collection (VHS, Hi8, MiniDV, audiocassette, open-reel audio)

Edit/process digitized media to enable appropriate access/sharing to community and other researchers

Two pre-digitization gatherings to consult with families of knowledge holders, or other stakeholders to determine tapes for prioritization for digitization

Six small gatherings post-digitization to determine accuracy of description metadata and transcriptions
