Description:
Awakening our Old Stories is a preservation and restoration of 250 Anishinaabe Elder interviews from community gatherings, events, and meetings; indeed, the sharing and celebration of Wiikwemkoong Anishinaabek knowledge and the traditions will benefit current and future generations for years to come. The organization will be digitizing old VHS tapes, which hold a wealth of untapped knowledge, as the format is not conducive for current technology to share. The project is one year and includes Digitization, Classification, and Preservation of Elder Interviews, including Uploading to various platforms.
Organization:
Library and Archives Canada
Expected Results:

One of the main expected results is long-term preservation of Anishinaabe knowledge, traditions, and stories. The consultation and collaborations with current Elders will allow for increase of community connections, as the digitization of the VHS tapes would serve as conduit to spark discussions. The data and information gained would be utilized to allow community service providers to work in a more culturally relevant manner, based upon the knowledge gained and shared through the digitization of the videos. Finally, some of the videos will be shared on social media platforms and web-based platforms, to allow for researchers and Canadians to get a glimpse into Anishinaabek worldviews and perspectives, which could lead to a better reconciliatory relationship.
