Description:
The Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre (NNM) in Burnaby, British Columbia, and the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in Toronto, Ontario, will embark on a joint project to preserve Japanese Canadian history and heritage for all Canadians. The organizations will work together to preserve records and facilitate access for researchers, scholars, students, general public, and the Vancouver Japanese Language School, the oldest Japanese language school in Canada. In 2018, the NNM will undergo renovations, which will impact its permanent and temporary storage areas. With an aim to expand, fragile records and artefacts requiring rehousing and description are at the highest risk of damage caused by the required relocation. This project aims to mitigate any loss and/or damage by processing NNM's most vulnerable and highly sought-after fonds.

Expected Results:
Expected results (outcomes) for the project include: (1) increased capacity to provide supported public access to fonds/collections through the online database and physically in the institutions; (2) increased physical capacity to accept new acquisitions and accruals; (3) increased access for scholars, researchers, students and the general public; (4) at-risk records and artefacts are properly accessioned, arranged and described, digitized, and readily available for all levels of access, including access to formats other than photographs and textual records, such as film and audio; (5) material that is stable and accessible for use in curated educational programming, exhibits, and other engagement programming; (6) expanded access to resources at the Nikkei National Museum and Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre; (7) preservation of records and artefacts for the benefit of future generations; and (8) the continued commitment from different institutions in the Nikkei community to support each other and share sustainable practices.
