Title:
Development of new plant-based and insect-based reference materials for food and feed applications
Agreement Number:
947498
Agreement Value:
$157,158.00
Agreement Date:
Mar 30, 2020 - Mar 31, 2024
Description:
During this project, certified reference materials (CRMs) of novel protein sources, such as insect-based proteins and plant-based proteins, will be produced by NRC institutes for food and feed applications. These physical standards will facilitate the development of characterization strategies for novel protein sources. These strategies will be developed in conjunction with industrial process development so as to codify competitive advantages in quality and increase the potential for branding. Several CRMs will be developed and standards will be drafted for this new industry. To characterize these CRMs in terms of trace elements profile, speciation and bio-accessibility, the expertise in chemical risk assessment methodologies and testing of Diane Beauchemin at Queen's University will be drawn upon. Two students under her supervision will be working with Queen’s University and undertake collaborative R&D with the Metrology group at NRC.
Organization:
National Research Council Canada
Expected Results:

In the short term, anticipated outcomes will be strengthened collaborations across industry, academia, and government to support research excellence. In the medium term, anticipated outcomes will be the development of new and potentially disruptive technologies with collaborators. In the long term, find collaborative solutions to public policy challenges and create stronger innovation systems.
