Title:
CIIP Korea project SRaSTCSpS Smart Raman Spectroscopy Tissue Characterization System to Guide Pedicle Screw Placement in Spinal Surgery
Agreement Number:
952396
Agreement Value:
$451,800.00
Agreement Date:
Apr 1, 2020 - Mar 31, 2023
Description:
CIIP Korea project SRaSTCSpS with U&I Corporation (Korea) Lumbar implants require the insertion of pedicle screws, which has traditionally been performed using anatomical references (intra- or pre-operative radiological imaging) to determine their entry point. However, these techniques are limited in terms tissue characterization specificity, can incur large radiation exposure (intra-operative imaging) and spatial localization errors (pre-operative imaging). The purpose of this project is to develop a Raman spectroscopy system for intra-operative tissue characterization during pedicle screw placement. Using Raman molecular fingerprinting capabilities, the device will detect nerve bundles, soft tissue and bone in real-time ensuring no damage to nerves are incurred while drilling.
