Title:
ALKELECT -HIGH PERFORMANCE MEMBRANE ELECTRODE ASSEMBLIES FOR ALKALINE SOLID ELECTROLYTE WATER ELECTROLYSERS
Agreement Number:
953747
Agreement Value:
$527,940.00
Agreement Date:
Aug 18, 2020 - Mar 31, 2022
Description:
AlkElect will advance alkaline electrolysis as an affordable and reliable energy storage solution for the integration of renewable energy. The R&D will build on recent advances made in the increased stability of alkaline anion exchange membranes. The expected result is an alkaline membrane electrode assembly (MEA) able to produce low cost, low carbon intensity H2. IEK-11 will develop the alkaline based MEA, which is the heart of the electrolyser. IEK-11’s MEA expertise should result in an efficient and high performing MEA for AlkElect. To succeed, NRC willcollaborate and develop the necessary catalysts for the MEA. Specifically, NRC will design new noble-metal free catalysts and catalyst structures for AlkElect. IEK-11, will incorporate these catalysts into the MEA they are developing which will also include new advanced alkaline membranes donated by Canadian company, Ionomr.
Organization:
National Research Council Canada
Expected Results:
In the short term, anticipated outcomes will be strengthened collaborations across industry, academia, and government to support research excellence. In the medium term, anticipated outcomes will be the development of new and potentially disruptive technologies with collaborators. In the long term, find collaborative solutions to public policy challenges and create stronger innovation systems.
