Title:
DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW POWER-TO-X TECHNOLOGY FOR ONE-STEP FLUE GAS CONVERSION INTO LOW-CARBON ENERGY VECTORS
Agreement Number:
959544
Agreement Value:
$224,197.00
Agreement Date:
Oct 30, 2020 - Mar 31, 2023
Description:
The project aims to develop the Power-to-X (PtX) technology, a disruptive process using only CO2 and water as feedstock to produce a syngas which can then be used for energy production or converted into other key low-carbon energy vectors, such as methanol, methane or diesel. The advantage of this process is the elimination of the H2 production through water electrolysis. Doing so reduces the overall CAPEX and OPEX of the process. Project focus will also be on the optimization of a low-cost catalyst currently being used in order to improve its catalytic performance (activity and stability). The project will contribute to the development of a technology with significant potential to decarbonize industry, through uptake of waste CO2 streams as well as the transportation sector, through production of low carbon intensity fuels. The resulting technology could be a technological solution for both the aviation and marine transportation sectors which currently have no commercial options for low carbon intensity fuels. Both of these sectors require energy dense liquid fuels. Developing a scalable process able to provide a solution for these sectors will be a benefit to Canada, industry and the transportation sector.
Organization:
National Research Council Canada
Expected Results:

In the short term, anticipated outcomes will be strengthened collaborations across industry, academia, and government to support research excellence.
