Title:
Freeform Printing of High-Performance, Multifunctional Thermoset Nanocomposites Via Frontal Polymerization
Agreement Value:
$25,000.00
Agreement Date:
May 19, 2021 - Sep 30, 2022
Description:
In this project, our research group at Colorado State University will collaborate to develop new additive manufacturing techniques for freeform printing of polymer nanocomposites. We will use direct ink writing (DIW) method to dispense the prepared nano-modified resin ink and simultaneously cure it following the extrusion from the printing nozzle via frontal polymerization. Various characterization techniques will be used to determine and optimize the rheological and thermochemical properties of the nano-modified ink. The printing process and parameters will be precisely tuned to enable freeform printing of polymer nanocomposites with a high dimensional fidelity.
Organization:
National Research Council Canada
Expected Results:
In the short term, anticipated outcomes will be strengthened collaborations across industry, academia, and government to support research excellence. In the medium term, anticipated outcomes will be the development of new and potentially disruptive technologies with collaborators. In the long term, find collaborative solutions to public policy challenges and create stronger innovation systems.

Collaborative Science, Technology and Innovation Program – Ideation Fund
Program Purpose:
The Ideation Fund is intended to encourage, test and validate transformative research ideas generated by teams of NRC scientific personnel and external collaborators with complementary capabilities, acting as a demonstration phase for a continually-evolving suite of research and development (R&D) deliverables at the NRC. The fund supports exploratory research through two mechanisms: the New Beginnings Initiative and the Small Teams Initiative.
