Title:
Development of separation and characterization methods for nanoplastics reference materials
Agreement Number:
973445
Agreement Value:
$206,010.00
Agreement Date:
Jun 15, 2021 - Jun 14, 2025
Description:
This project is designed to better understand the impact of nanoplastics on Canadian waterbodies and to fully investigate the chemical compositions of the nanoplastics in those waterbodies. The project goals are to establish and fine-tune an effective sample pre-treatment and preparation method to separate heterogeneous nanoplastic samples, to establish a novel library of thermal analysis data collected from multi-component mixtures of model nanoplastics commonly found in Canadian environmental samples, to validate nanoplastics test protocols using both spiked and real-world samples, and ultimately to identify and quantitatively analyze nanoplastics in Canadian waterbodies.
Organization:
National Research Council Canada
Expected Results:

In the short term, anticipated outcomes will be strengthened collaborations across industry, academia, and government to support research excellence. In the medium term, anticipated outcomes will be the development of new and potentially disruptive technologies with collaborators. In the long term, find collaborative solutions to public policy challenges and create stronger innovation systems.
