Title:
Evaluation of compostable bioplastics for food packaging
Agreement Number:
976531
Agreement Value:
$196,523.00
Agreement Date:
Sep 2, 2021 - Sep 30, 2023
Description:
The Project will support innovation in the Canadian food packaging industry through the development of new materials that 1) increase their sustainability, 2) cope with new regulations related to Canada’s Zero Plastic Waste Strategy, 3) enhance their competitiveness in the global market and 4) support Canada’s policy on bioeconomy and circular economy. NRC is developing a new generation of compostable bioplastics from Canadian renewable resources (starch, oil, cellulose etc.) and commercial bioplastics as well as knowhow on compostable materials formulations. Prairie Research Kitchen at Red River College will collaborate with the NRC as it is equipped to evaluate the performance of these new materials in different food media. Such information is critical for technology development and as a way to determine the potential applications and adoption by the food packaging industry. Prairie Research Kitchen at Red River College has the capabilities and expertise to test the new bioplastics in a number of challenging food environments.
