Title:
Binder-based additive manufacturing of aluminum: development of fast and safe process parameters
Agreement Number:
997596
Agreement Value:
$120,450.00
Agreement Date:
Nov 1, 2022 - Jul 25, 2025
Description:
The evolution of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies has provided new manufacturing capabilities and triggered an industrial revolution. Binder-based AM (BBAM) is an emerging technique that has the potential to significantly increase the cost-effectiveness of AM and allow greater adoption in many industrial sectors, especially in transportation. However, some technological gaps still need to be filled to achieve industrial success. The project will involve evaluating the BBAM technique for fabricating structural aluminum parts. As part of the overall project goal, NRC is collaborating with RRC Polytech to assess and predict dimensional changes occurring during the entire BBAM process cycle using the X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) non-destructive inspection technology. The project will involve the generation of 3D data on the dimensional changes and distortions occurring during the BBAM process stages and apply the data in the development of machine learning models to enable fast adaptation of the initial design. The outcome of the project will benefit manufacturers involved in AM or considering AM
