Title:
A self-driving laboratory for CO2 utilization
Agreement Number:
1004021
Agreement Value:
$675,000.00
Agreement Date:
Jun 20, 2023 - Mar 31, 2026
Description:
The Project is designed to accelerate the development of a reactor (a “bicarbonate electrolyser”) that converts CO2 capture solutions into methane, a valuable commodity chemical. The Project team will expand upon an existing self-driving lab at UBC to make and test electrolyser components faster than is possible manually. The overarching Project goal is to use data produced with this self-driving lab, coupled with a multiphysics model created with the NRC, to demonstrate methane production in a bicarbonate electrolyser with a partial current density (jCH4) of >200 mA/cm2 (e.g., 50% selectivity for methane at a total current density of 400 mA/cm2).
Organization:
National Research Council Canada
Expected Results:

In the short term, anticipated outcomes will be strengthened collaborations across industry, academia, and government to support research excellence. In the medium term, anticipated outcomes will be the development of new and potentially disruptive technologies with collaborators. In the long term, find collaborative solutions to public policy challenges and create stronger innovation systems.
