Title:
HDS Leak Detection 2.0
Agreement Number:
1029518
Agreement Value:
$340,000.00
Agreement Date:
Mar 4, 2025 - Apr 2, 2025
Description:
Preventative leak detection is a growing field in the pipeline monitoring industry. Distributed fiber optic sensing is a major technology platform for this service. Hifi's high fidelity dynamic sensing system (HDS) is capable of sensing acoustics, temperature, strain and vibration in or near a pipeline in very high fidelity. The system, which can monitor very long distances, has been successfully used for leak detection in land and offshore pipelines in Canada and the United States, as well as in other international regions such as South America and Europe.
A variety of artificial intelligence / machine learning based software methods such as leak signature classification, flow anomaly localization, and observing major changes in the pipeline acoustic propagation model, are being developed for leak detection. Results from independent lab tests where the efficacy of the system in detecting pinhole leaks with pressure ratings as low as 5 psi and flow rates down to 0.1 LPM has been proven. Hifi's HDS technology can help make pipelines safer and represent an excellent made-in-Canada solution to a very relevant Canadian problem.

Program Purpose:
The NRC-IRAP Clean Technology Program will support Canadian SMEs in the research and development of sustainable development technologies, up to their commercialization, with the potential to deliver economic and environmental outcomes.
Coverage:
NRC-IRAP Clean Technology projects stimulate wealth creation for Canada through sustainable development technological innovation, while improving Canada’s environmental indicators related to greenhouse gas emissions (GCG), waste management, air quality or drinking water based on the types of sustainable development technologies that will be supported.│Les projets de technologies propres du PARI-CNRC stimulent la création de richesse pour le Canada grâce à l’innovation technologique en matière de développement durable, tout en améliorant les indicateurs environnementaux du Canada liés aux émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES), à la gestion des déchets, à la qualité de l’air ou à l’eau potable en fonction des types de technologies de développement durable qui seront soutenues.
