Description:

The North Slave Métis Alliance (NSMA) represents the Aboriginal rightsbearing Métis of the Great Slave Lake. NSMA members have lived and occupied this region since the 18th century, holding deep knowledge and respect of the land. In response to climate change and its impact on traditional food systems, NSMA is creating an Indigenous Knowledge and Climate Change (IKCC) database. This database will contain historic and newly documented NSMA traditional and local knowledge of environmental change and can be braided with Western Science qualitative data analysis to answer pressing questions and provide guidance on food security and climate resilience. Complementary initiatives include the Guardianship Program, which monitors land-based changes across traditional territory. Observations from guardians will be incorporated into the IKCC.

Expected Results:

In the short term, anticipated outcomes will be strengthened collaborations across industry, academia, and government to support research excellence. In the medium term, anticipated outcomes will be the development of new and potentially disruptive technologies with collaborators. In the long term, find collaborative solutions to public policy challenges and create stronger innovation systems.
