Description:
According to Telesat, 2.3 million households in Canada currently do not have access to affordable and reliable high-speed internet. This is partially due to the vast remote region that makes it impractical for the installation of fiber-optic cables in those areas. The consequence of this is that those households are prevented from fully participating in and benefitting from the digital economy, including opportunities for education, job advancement and access to healthcare. When faced with similar challenges, several developing nations like India are now focusing on projects like “Frugal 5G” that “connects the unconnected,” by first identifying the unique challenges faced in rural areas, and consequently adopting approaches like use of TV whitespace as well as low-cost WLAN networks. This project aims in investigating and developing novel radio frequency antenna systems capable of wireless communications in Satellites in rural areas. This system will be adaptable to the needs and required frequency applications.

In the short term, anticipated outcomes will be strengthened collaborations across industry, academia, and government to support research excellence.
