Agreement Number:
967227
Agreement Value:
$25,000.00
Agreement Date:
Mar 11, 2021 - Sep 30, 2022
Description:
In this research, a high-entropy nitride coating will be developed for various critical industrial applications and at the same time advancing our understanding of this new type of material system. The main objective of the project is to explore the novel high-entropy nitride coating which combines multiple alloying elements and nanocomposite, with an overarching goal of achieving the multifunctionality of this new coating system for applications under adverse environments. The developed coatings are expected to have superior performances resulting from: (1) rationally selecting five or more principal elements and properly designing the composition based on the functionalities, (2) introducing a ductile phase in hard and nanograined high-entropy nitride matrix, and (3) optimizing process parameters. To further enhance the industrial relevance, the proposed coatings will be fabricated and optimized using an industrial wildly-used cathodic arc evaporation technique.

Program:
Collaborative Science, Technology and Innovation Program – Ideation Fund
Program Purpose:

The Ideation Fund is intended to encourage, test and validate transformative research ideas generated by teams of NRC scientific personnel and external collaborators with complementary capabilities, acting as a demonstration phase for a continually-evolving suite of research and development (R&D) deliverables at the NRC. The fund supports exploratory research through two mechanisms: the New Beginnings Initiative and the Small Teams Initiative.
