Description:
Paulatuk, NWT is committed to reducing energy costs and carbon emissions from its current reliance on diesel and fuel oil for electricity and heating. The housing problems, prompting adoption of the Paulatuk Housing Plan (2021), which focuses on reducing overcrowding, improving housing conditions, and designing homes to meet local needs. The Paulatuk Energy Working Group (PEWG) aims to improve housing conditions and install large-scale clean energy sources. This project will analyze building energy demands to reduce energy needs, guide retrofit and replacement decisions, and integrate clean electricity for heating. A community course and consultation event will be delivered on building operation, maintenance, and performance. Issues experienced with housing will be gathered and solutions defined in community specifications for construction. This project will improve housing adequacy, suitability, and emissions and providing cost savings.

In the short term, anticipated outcomes will be strengthened collaborations across industry, academia, and government to support research excellence. In the medium term, anticipated outcomes will be the development of new and potentially disruptive technologies with collaborators. In the long term, find collaborative solutions to public policy challenges and create stronger innovation systems.
