Description:
Gaps in water quality monitoring include a need for real-time data or in many cases, near real-time data, as well as sensors that detect a variety of targets of concern. These gaps will be addressed by identification of the most critical issues through community engagement (on-going), and by adding capacity to NWT’s water quality monitoring program by testing various technologies that can augment data collection speed and broaden the number of targets and indicators that can be measured. Technologies to be explored include internet of things data transmission modules, either connected to existing systems (such as YSI sondes) or novel sensor systems (e.g., microbial fuel cells, portable spectroscopy). The Project will also prioritize knowledge transfer to communities, enabling local stewardship of aquatic ecosystems.

In the short term, anticipated outcomes will be strengthened collaborations across industry, academia, and government to support research excellence. In the medium term, anticipated outcomes will be the development of new and potentially disruptive technologies with collaborators.
