Description:
The objective of this Project is to adapt methods of mapping water extent for use in Google Earth Engine imagery and apply to pilot project study areas, assemble a database of spatio-temporal trends in surface water prior to peat fires and in similar non-burned peatlands, and to test time series analysis methods for their ability to determine the temporal conditions in surface water that occurs before peat fires, and link this to risk of fire.

This Project will enable the monitoring of peatlands to identify severe conditions sooner, enhancing the safety and security of Canadians. This Project supports the development of knowledge for fire management agencies in understanding landscape and environmental factors that trigger large wildfires.
