Description:
This grant is to support the establishment of the IEA Observatory on Energy, AI and Data Centres. It will also serve to provide the IEA with additional resources to support the development of research, policy analysis, workshops, and event preparations as part of Canada's delivery of an AI and Energy outcome under its 2025 G7 Presidency. The analysis will also provide G7 members with a better understanding of the AI and energy policy and regulatory measures being implemented globally, including in the U.S. - e.g. on data centre colocation and on use of coal and natural gas to power data centres.

Expected Results:

Canada is working with the IEA to identify a role for the IEA Observatory in tracking and reporting back to G7 Energy Ministers on the progress made in delivering G7 priorities on AI and Energy. The AI Observatory would also provide G7 members with analysis and data that can support government and industry with effective decision and policy making in addressing AI for energy and energy for AI issues.
