Description:

The objective of this Project is to assess the cold tolerance of hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) populations in Canada by measuring super cooling points, determining the cold tolerance strategy of HWA and the lower lethal limits of overwintering HWA.

Expected Results:

The Proponent will study the cold tolerance of HWA, an invasive pest threatening hemlock forests in Nova Scotia and southern Ontario. Using laboratory experiments on field-collected samples, the Project will determine HWA’s cold tolerance strategy and develop lethal time-temperature models to assess its potential range and guide management efforts in Canada.
