Description:

The objective of this project is to carry out research that records, preserves, and shares the knowledge, values, experiences and methods used by former Indigenous firefighters who worked on fire crews based out of Forth Smith, Northwest Territories.

This Project will contribute information on effective firefighting techniques from the cultural and technical perspective of Indigenous fire crews. The Project will generate information that supports the integration of Indigenous knowledge, western science, and cultural and administrative dynamics for fire management agencies.

The purpose is to increase the resiliency of Canadian communities to the risks and impacts of natural disasters, and to undertake and implement risk reduction analyses and actions. To ensure that wildfire response agencies are integrated with each other in order to implement an effective wildland fire response program, and, to increase the wildfire knowledge of agencies, communities and individuals, in order to create a culture of wildfire safety and to empower the public to understand risk.
