Description:

Identify how adaptive silviculture practices can be used to produce forests that are less susceptible to climate extremes, with a specific focus on facilitating stand and environmental site conditions that allow for there generation of future climate-adapted species, develop adaptive silvicultural practices that can be used to buffer mature forests from negative climate change impacts, with a focus on increasing tree and stand resistance to drought stress in the intermediate term, and identify adaptive silvicultural methods that will increase the resilience of forest stands to climate sensitive disturbances, specifically wildfire and forest pathogens, in the intermediate to long-term.

Improve the ability of forest managers to maintain and enhance resilient forests that provide multiple benefits and are more robust to future uncertainty due to climate change; - Maintaining a robust forest sector for Canadians, but particularly to communities whose economic, social and cultural wellbeing is contingent on sustainable forest management; - Targeted focus on evaluating silvicultural strategies for climate change adaptation; - Contribute to a broader understanding of the impacts of climate change on forests by being associated with the ASCC network, an international network of scientists and managers working collectively toward a common goal of producing more resilient forest systems; and - Provide stakeholders with operational tools and information related to adaptive silviculture, and a demonstration that even under rapidly shifting climate conditions there are options for management that can work.

Program Purpose:

The objective of the Forest Innovation Program (FIP) is to enable transformation in the Canadian forest industry. More specifically, the FIP will help drive forest sector transformation, sparking enterprises in their move beyond a dependence on commodity products toward value-added, high-value and specialty products – sustainably extracting the maximum value from the fibre resource. To achieve this, the FIP will facilitate and promote a value-chain approach that addresses innovation from the seed to the end markets and products in which the right fibre is matched to the right product.
