Program Purpose:

The overall objective is to understand the factors affecting the sustainability of mixedwood and hybrid poplar (HP) plantations along the forest fringe in western Canada by quantifying the growth and water use over the life cycle of these plantations growing under different soil, climate and management conditions. The specific objectives are: - to study the influence of biophysical variables and soil type, - to determine C-source/sink relationships in a chronosequence of HP plantations, - to determine the water balance and estimate water use and water use efficiency, and - to validate and use 3PG, a process-based ecosystem model.
