Engage Grants for Universities
Program Purpose:

Although ammonia oxidation is an important process for bioreactors treating industrial waste, the identities andx000D
functional contributions of the microorganisms catalyzing this important process remains unknown for manyx000D
engineered systems. This research partnership will test samples taken temporally from a lab-scale pilotx000D
bioreactor to identify the active ammonia oxidizers and assess the ability of genes collected from these systemsx000D
to identify the functions of detected microorganisms. This research is important because bioreactor systemsx000D
treating industrial waste are notoriously unstable and Tetra Tech is currently unable to identify ammoniax000D
oxidizers upon which their system performance depends. Identifying microorganisms involved in ammoniax000D
oxidation will help identify the causes of instability, possible solutions related to the manipulation of processx000D
parameters, and a protocol that Tetra Tech can follow in the future for monitoring bioreactor microbialx000D
communities.
