Engage Grants for Universities
Program Purpose:

Through a collaboration with Talok Fisheries LP, research is proposed to assist the Lake Babine First Nation tox000D
improve upon the economic performance of their inland commercial fishery for sockeye salmon whilex000D
protecting co-migrating sockeye stocks of conservation concern. In this fishery, revenues could be enhancedx000D
substantially by timing harvest opportunities to maximize flesh quality if it could be done so withoutx000D
compromising the ecological sustainability of their commercial operations. This is limited by a lack ofx000D
knowledge of both the timing of stock-specific migration patterns through Lake Babine and flesh deteriorationx000D
processes. The proposed research will employ both external mark-recapture tagging combined withx000D
physiological tools to assess run-timing of Lake Babine sockeye salmon and monitor flesh deteriorationx000D
through the fishing season.
