Program Purpose:

The overarching vision of this project is to design and build a collaborative service robot that will help peoplex000D
with developmental disabilities reach their personal goals and achieve greater independence, using existing andx000D
new technologies. This will allow JDQ Systems Inc. to advance the type of services provided tox000D
developmentally disabled people and their caregivers in a group home environment.x000D
The aim of continuing this project in particular is to improve the accuracy and safety of the autonomous robotx000D
navigation in a group home environment. This requires increasing the precision of localizing the robot in thex000D
group home, navigating on the map, and identification and avoidance of inanimate and human obstacles.x000D
Delivering such a service robot will improve the scale of services provided to developmentally disabled peoplex000D
economically. It also reduces the burden of repetitive tasks on the caregivers and frees up their time to focus onx000D
other tasks that robots cannot do well at present. Developing such a technology for JDQ Systems Inc. paves thex000D
way to achieve greater goals that will result in continual improvement of support services accompanied withx000D
continual attention to the efficient use of limited financial resources. Achieving the goals of this project alsox000D
allows to investigate the growing problems and opportunities in the health and elder care sectors that willx000D
manifest in Canadian society as our population ages.
