Program:
Engage Grants for Colleges
Program Purpose:

The Ontario Beekeepers' Association (OBA) works to ensure a thriving and sustainable beekeeping industry inx000D
Ontario. The association advocates for beekeepers' interests, supports honey bee research and delivers practicalx000D
training and information. The OBA has approached the College's Honours Bachelors of Applied Technologyx000D
(Biotechnology) program to examine the effectiveness of Ontario honey as a wound treatment. In partnershipx000D
with the OBA, Fanshawe College will collect data and complete analysis from a sample of 40 apiaries inx000D
Ontario. The goal is to identify the correlation between apiary conditions and honey which has properties thatx000D
could be effective for wound treatment. The outcomes of this project would result in the creation of a newx000D
honey product with a much higher price-point for Ontario's beekeepers. Through participation in this project,x000D
the Fanshawe student research assistants (RAs) will improve their understanding of data collection methods,x000D
experimental design and testing, and will have the opportunity to participate in a research project in a clientx000D
facing role.
