Collaborative Research and Development Grants - Project
Program Purpose:

High power medium voltage drives are key for industries to operate pumps, fans, traction motors, etc. With the emphasis on energy efficiency in recent years, there is a demand of high performance drives with regenerative operation capability that allow motors to feed energy back to the power grid. Multilevel converter based drives are very good candidates for high power medium voltage applications with advantages such as high power quality, enhanced reliability, etc. However, there is a lack of high-level converter based drives that allow regenerative operation and satisfactory low motor speed operation. x000D

In this Collaborative Research and Development (CRD) program, we proposed two multilevel converter topologies for medium voltage and high power drive applications. The proposed topologies could operate at 7-level or even higher output, and have low costs, high reliability, modular features, as well as the capability of regenerative operation and low-speed operation. Research outcome in this program will timely address the industrial need of high performance high power drives.x000D
