services packaged sewage treatment systems. BMSna finds that effluent from their sewage treatment systems isx000D
quite warm, even in cold winter. The company wants to develop a technology to harness this thermal energy.x000D
Though experienced in sewage treatment systems, BMSna does not have the expertise in thermodynamics andx000D
heat transfer that is needed to analyze the available thermal energy. With a partnership between the companyx000D
and the applicant's research team at Memorial University, the objective of this Engage project is to conductx000D
thermal fluids modeling of the sewage treatment plant and come up with a conceptual system design for thex000D
specific thermal energy recovery problem. BMSna can then use the research results for their feasibility study,x000D
prototype design and development. If successful, the thermal energy recovery and storage technology willx000D
greatly increase the energy and environmental advantages of existing and new sewage treatment plants. Thex000D
plants will not only operate at higher efficiency and reliability, but can also provide useful heat for hot water orx000D
space heating, which would be particularly beneficial to remote communities in the north. There are alsox000D
significant environmental benefits in terms of reduced pollution and less disturbance to biology systems at thex000D
treated water discharge locations. The outcomes of this research project could make significant contribution tox000D
Canada's efforts towards sustainable development.
