Program Purpose:

Biomass is well positioned to assume a major share of energy sources for heating purposes in northern Canada.x000D
This partnership project aims at improving the operational efficiency of biomass boilers and extending theirx000D
service continuity by developing a benchmark availability-based maintenance plan in the context of northernx000D
community applications. We estimate the reliability functions of a range of biomass boilers and theirx000D
components. In doing so, the cost and frequency of maintenance will be minimized by reducing overx000D
maintenance through prioritization of the components according to their impact on availability of boilers. Thisx000D
methodology will improve the operational efficiency of biomass boilers and extend their service continuity byx000D
developing an availability-based maintenance plan. This is reflecting the fact that the availability of heat andx000D
hot water during (long and severe) winter seasons in northern Canada is a critical operational requirement forx000D
biomass boilers.
