Program Purpose:

ecobee is a Canadian manufacturer of smart thermostats that leverages wireless sensors (temperature, presence,x000D
movement) to adjust the temperature in the house according to room occupancy and consequently save energy.x000D
Their technology is used to minimize energy spent for heating and cooling by setting the comfort temperaturex000D
to rooms that are in use. However, their technology currently provides limited use to other applications inx000D
different domains (e.g. the health and wellness). Nonetheless, it has great potential for home remote monitoringx000D
of individuals that need supervision, provided that a few small modifications are made in their technology. Thisx000D
new partnership will explore the use of ecobee's sensor data to identify patterns in user behaviour, socialx000D
isolation, and mobility limitations, expanding the use of ecobee into remote monitoring technologies. Throughx000D
the design of a study combining activity trackers with ecobee data, we aim at evaluating the technicalx000D
requirements and the feasibility of using ecobee's remote sensors for remote patient monitoring. In this project,x000D
we will leverage machine learning algorithms to detect deviation from common patterns, in addition to thex000D
technical requirements for a new generation of sensors.
