Grants and Contributions:
Grant or Award spanning more than one fiscal year (2017-2018 to 2018-2019).
In this project, we work closely with BRQ Fibre & Broyure (BRQ) to apply the knowledge of operationsx000D
research combining the concept of transportation backhauling to adapt and engineer a new integrated inboundx000D
and outbound transportation backhaul model. The objective is to improve the transportation efficiency andx000D
reduce transportation cost through the integrated inbound and outbound transportation planning. BRQ is ax000D
Quebec-based recycling company. It provides recycling and recovering services that turn construction,x000D
renovation and demolition (CRD) wastes into clean and certified industrial grade products to regain valuesx000D
while addressing one of the major environmental challenges faced in Canada. In recycle industry,x000D
transportation accounts for a significant part of the total operational cost. Reducing transportation cost andx000D
improving transportation efficiency are crucial for the company. Currently, BRQ uses several carrierx000D
contractors transporting inbound CRD material from many industrial CRD sites, industrial eco-depos, andx000D
municipal eco-centers. They also transport outbound recycled products to various industrial manufacturers,x000D
farmers and customers in the bioenergy sectors. Transportation decisions are largely made by the transportx000D
manager at BRQ with few backhaul trips and little cross inbound and outbound trip coordination. Althoughx000D
there are significant cost saving opportunities from the inbound and outbound transportation coordination, withx000D
the information support from the company's enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, there are severalx000D
challenges. In this project, we will first study the current transportation operations and planning process. Then,x000D
we will engineer an integrated inbound and outbound transportation backhauling model, design the datax000D
structure and input/output data connectivity to allow BRQ transport manager to evaluate differentx000D
transportation route possibilities. This will help the transport manager to find more eligible and optimalx000D
backhaul routes to significantly reduce the empty truck traveling, improve transportation efficiency, reducex000D
transportation cost and greenhouse gas emissions.
