Recipient's Legal Name:
Herbert, David (University of Manitoba)
Program:
Engage Plus Grants for universities
Program Purpose:

Acccurate and robust analysis of oxychlorine compounds in water is essential to the effective deployment ofx000D
chlorine-based water treatment. The current standard methods are inadequate for the discrimination ofx000D
molecular species such as chlorine dioxide (ClO2) from ionic compounds such as chlorite (ClO2-) and chloratex000D
(ClO3-). The development of a simple method with reasonable error, accuracy for field use, and reliability inx000D
laboratory settings has the potential to greatly enhance quality control. The proposed Engage Plus project willx000D
build on the previously funded Engage collaboration between inorganic chemists at the University of Manitobax000D
and the water-purification experts at Osorno Enterprises, Inc., a Winnipeg-based bio-environmental companyx000D
and industry leader in water quality and disinfection, specializing in tailored solutions for small communities,x000D
hospitals and industry. The proposed project will expand on results from the Engage collaboration tox000D
standardize a new method for chlorite determination in water using commercially available, easy-to-handlex000D
reagents. A successful project outcome would benefit Osorno by developing a standard methodology forx000D
quality control in oxychlorine production.
