Program Purpose:

L'Alliance Boviteq (known as SEMEX) provides genetic resources to cattle farmers through fresh andx000D
cryopreserved semen, and believes that the post-thaw recovery using present cryopreservation techniques playsx000D
a critical role in bull semen provider choice. Industry standard bull sperm cryopreservation protocols yieldx000D
approximately 65% viable sperm, reducing efficiency compared to natural bred heiffers. Thus, in addition tox000D
within-market competition, there is a pressing market-based need for improved cryopreservation protocols tox000D
increase post-thaw recovery and its associated return on investment. Here we propose to explore optimalx000D
cryopreservation media by combining novel biophysical and biochemical tools with mathematical modeling tox000D
improve two major parts of a semen cryopreservation protocol with the long term goal of improved post thawx000D
fertility of bull semen.
