The Gates Research Group at SFU focuses on pursuing the development of synthetic methods and chemical processes to prepare a variety of functional materials, from nanoscale to bulk, for a diverse range of applications. A critical component of harnessing the potential of these materials is the ability to controllably and reliably tune their surface and interfacial chemistries. The Gates Research Group is pursuing a number of analytical studies to advance our understanding and control of chemical modifications on the surfaces of these materials. A key attribute of their research and development efforts have been to develop methods to improve the chemistries available and routes to achieving these surface modifications. Some of the technology developed by this team has demonstrated a simple process to tune the chemistry of surfaces as it pertains to cell adhesion and proliferation. To protect the intellectual property, two PCT applications have been filed associated with this technology. x000D
