Program Purpose:

The objective of this study is thus to take advantage of presence of large amount of wireless network data tox000D
provide insights on how transport planners can sense the movement of people more regularly, with reducedx000D
cost, and in a large scale, especially in circumstances where detailed mobility survey data are unavailable. Forx000D
this purpose, this research will develop new algorithms for trip generation and distribution models usingx000D
wireless network data. These models will then be validated using ground truth information. The outcomesx000D
from this study can potentially motivate transport planners in Canada to shift from costly and time consumingx000D
traditional planning, to a more data-driven planning process. This is relevant to TELUS in the context thatx000D
cellular network companies are keen to leverage their data to develop innovative and new tools to improvex000D
transportation planning and operation.
