Grants and Contributions:
Grant or Award spanning more than one fiscal year (2017-2018 to 2018-2019).
More efficient, versatile, and longer-lasting than incandescent bulbs, LED lights have revolutionized thex000D
horticulture industry. To prevent performance issues in the LED, heat generated by an LED light is dissipatedx000D
through an attached heat sink. Such heat sinks are traditionally large and heavy.x000D
URSA has developed a range of LEDs with carefully engineered spectra for optimal plant growth, but whichx000D
have not yet been optimized for thermal dissipation in warm and damp hothouse environments.x000D
This research project will enhance and optimize heat sinks for the unique LED configuration within URSA'sx000D
Optilux series of horticultural lights. The resulting prototype will dissipate the required heat load of these lightsx000D
with an optimally small and lightweight heat sink.x000D
The resulting heat sink will benefit the company's cost base by rendering their light fixtures lighter, more costx000D
effective, and more competitive.x000D
This project will make horticultural lighting more lightweight, affordable, and energy-efficient, which willx000D
help to increase yields in greenhouses for Canadian growers and also reduce Canada's overall carbon-footprintx000D
for food production. In addition, the successful launch of a novel, disruptive, efficient, and cost-effectivex000D
product into the horticultural lighting sector will lead to the creation of more jobs at URSA and in thex000D
horticultural sector as a whole.
