Program Purpose:

Zaber Technologies's business is founded on the development and manufacture of precision positioning devicesx000D
used in a wide variety of applications and markets including photonics and optics, life sciences, microscopy,x000D
and industrial automation. In an effort to enhance their product lines, Zaber would like to create a linear stagex000D
with an embedded laser based interferometer to provide a much higher level of accuracy and precision.x000D
Because no commercially viable laser source exists for this application, this research proposal is aimed atx000D
investigating the creation of a new special-purpose laser designed for this application. Specifically, we willx000D
design a diode pumped solid state laser, commission its fabrication, and test the final product characterizing itsx000D
suitability for Zaber's application. This will include a full characterization of the spectral output, frequencyx000D
stability, tunability, reliability and reproducibility.
