Program Purpose:
Cannabis sativa (marijuana) plants bearing only female flowers (female plants) are cultivated for thex000D
production of cannabinoids (a group of psychoactive plant specialized metabolites typified by THC). However,x000D
female cannabis flowers can develop male organs (revert) in response to environmental ques, hormonal signals,x000D
and stress. Pollen from these induced male flowers fertilizes female flowers leading to a significant reductionx000D
in cannabinoid production. The main objectives of this research are to develop a database of genes that controlx000D
flower development in cannabis plants, and identify those responsible for flower reversion.
