Engage Grants for universities
Program Purpose:

Maritime Paper (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) manufactures a wide range of corrugated cardboard products for thex000D
packaging industry. The application of their corrugated cardboards has been limited to the packaging industry.x000D
Moreover, the traditional cardboard industry is seasonal. Expanding the product spectrum could give thex000D
company a product which demand would not be dependant of seasons like most of their current products.x000D
Keeping the plant busy during "slow season" could lead to more investments which would benefit the localx000D
economy. There are many potentials for the cardboard products to be implemented into lightweight insulatedx000D
wall panels in the building and construction industry. As wall panels in building are under variable pressurex000D
and suction due to wind and dynamic loading in extreme high wind events and possible flying objects duringx000D
wind storms, the application of the cardboard product needs sophisticated experimental studies. The objectivex000D
of this project is characterizing the behavior of wall panels made of cardboard cores using advanced analyticalx000D
and experimental studies under static and impact loadings (Dr. Sadeghian's expertise). The study will enablex000D
the company to optimize their cardboard design towards building and construction applications and possiblyx000D
opening new markets for their products. The project will also provide a strong platform for training of highlyx000D
qualified personnel skilled in advanced technologies.
