Program Purpose:

MMSI (McArthur Medical Sales Inc., Rockton, ON) developed an add-on adapter to connect the Respimatx000D
inhaler to commercially available masks that will facilitate the inhalation of ashtma medication by certainx000D
patients, normally seniors and children, who may normally lack coordination between actuation and inhalation.x000D
The effect of introducing the adapter (and mask) on the inhalation performance (medication delivery to thex000D
lungs) will be investigated in-vitro (indirectly using idealized mouth-throat-trachea replicas) and comparedx000D
against the efficiency of the Respimat inhaler alone. Deposition numerical simulations usingx000D
Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations or DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) for the single phasex000D
flow and Lagrangian random walk eddy interaction models (EIMs) for the particulate phase will also bex000D
performed and the results will be validated against the experimental data.
