Program Purpose:

UAV systems are currently utilized in different applications ranging from aerial photography of agriculture, fire services, gas and oil pipelines to aerial targets for military training. Qinetiq Target Systems (QTS) manufactures unmanned air, land, and surface vehicles for Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) and international military customers. QTS is located at Medicine Hat, Alberta, and is interested in improving the performance of a UAV helicopter for the Canadian Department of National Defence and also international military customers. This UAV provides an unmanned air target for live-fire training, weapon system test, and evaluation of Canadian forces.x000D
This collaborative project will characterize the aerodynamic performance of the current rotor blade by wind tunnel testing at the University of Alberta. The project also investigates application of piezoelectric actuators for control of dynamic stall over the retreading rotor blade through wind tunnel testing. The project will also increase wind-tunnel testing capabilities in Western Canada for development of UAV.x000D
