Program Purpose:

Gold is usually dissolved from ores using a cyanide solution. Because of the toxicity of cyanide, effluent solutions from gold mills must be treated to destroy residual cyanide prior to discharge into the environment. Conventional cyanide destruction technologies are expensive to operate because they rely on continuous addition of chemicals that are strong oxidants. Rather than using consumable reagents, cyanide may be oxidized at manganese dioxide coated electrodes that are held at an appropriate voltage. This project explores the technical and economic feasibility of using manganese dioxide coated electrodes an alternative technology for destruction of cyanide from gold mill effluent streams.x000D
