Program Purpose:

The ability to visualize a chemical reaction in real-time is a very powerful and much needed tool. Real-timex000D
feedback using this approach would allow chemical researchers to identify new transformations and study newx000D
catalysts. At the same time, this technology is needed to safely control production and manufacturingx000D
processes. Many analytical techniques have been adapted to probe chemical reactions in real-time, however,x000D
most have serious restrictions on the kind of reaction that can be investigated, or require significant effort tox000D
prepare samples for visualization. This is especially true for analysis by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR).x000D
Despite the wealth of kinetic and structural information available through this technique, broad application hasx000D
been hampered by the technical challenges of sampling and analysis. The challenge is to design and integratex000D
an efficient workflow that allows any reaction to be probed quickly, accurately and with minimal perturbationx000D
of the system under study. This project will develop new technology through a partnership with Nanalysis andx000D
researchers at the University of British Columbia. This team has separately developed new NMR hardwarex000D
(Nanalysys) and automated robotic sampling (UBC) that, when combined, will provide a new broadlyx000D
applicable NMR analysis technique.
